Candice Klug, PhD, has been appointed interim executive vice chair in the Department of Biophysics. In this role, Dr. Klug will provide operational leadership and work to position Biophysics for growth, innovation, and national prominence.

Dr. Klug is the James S. Hyde Professor of Biophysics. She serves as vice chair for research in the department and director of the Ϲ National Biomedical EPR Center, which was established by James S. Hyde, PhD, and funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 40 years.

Dr. Klug has a long history of service to Ϲ, including as president of the Faculty Council, chair of the Women’s Faculty Council, chair of the Women in Science Advisory Committee, director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Sciences, and director of the Biophysics Graduate Program.

Dr. Klug earned a BS degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a PhD in biophysics from Ϲ. After completing postdoctoral training in ophthalmic biophysical chemistry at the University of California Los Angeles Jules Stein Eye Institute, she returned to the Ϲ Department of Biophysics as assistant professor in 2001. Dr. Klug leads a productive and collaborative research program that has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for her entire career. Her research focuses on the structure and functional dynamics of soluble and membrane proteins, most specifically bacterial proteins involved in lipid transport and antibiotic resistance. She uses and develops EPR spectroscopy technology for the biomedical research community.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Klug.
