Biography
Hi! My name is Gabriella Snyder and I am from Adel, Iowa. I graduated from the University of Iowa in May 2024 with a BS in anthropology (medical anthropology track) and a BS in biology (genetics and biotechnology track).
I entered undergrad unsure of my exact career trajectory, but discovered through an array of experiences that genetic counseling was a perfect blend of all my interests. My medical anthropology classes taught me the importance of culturally sensitive care and an internship at the Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist was a hands-on application of that learning, as I worked in collaboration with Indigenous Nations to uncover Iowa’s archaeological past and amplify the state’s current Indigenous culture.
I also had the opportunity to do research in a biological anthropology lab, where I looked at the biological and cultural underpinnings of human emotion, and a computational psychiatry and genomics lab through the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics Summer Internship in Bioinformatics, where I connected language phenotypes and genetic risk for psychiatric conditions.
While I love the curiosity that fuels research discoveries, I am equally as passionate about conveying that information to the broader public. At Iowa, I was a fellow for a science communication and outreach initiative, wrote about life science and social science research for the university, conveyed the biology department’s research for touring high school students as a student ambassador, and dabbled in tutoring and TA interning for biology classes.
In my free time, you can find me painting, journaling, creatively writing, and reading (I am always looking for new Goodreads friends and book recommendations!). I am incredibly grateful to be a member of the fifth cohort of Ϲ’s MSGC program and I am looking forward to the new experiences, mentorship, and endless learning!
