Biography

Hi, my name is Kara, and I grew up in Hendersonville, Tennessee! I attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I completed the accelerated bachelor’s/master’s program and earned a B.S. in Genetics and Genomic Sciences and an M.S. in Multidisciplinary Biomedical Science with a concentration in Genetics in 2024.

At UAB, I served as President of the Student Association of Genetic Counseling, where I connected students with resources and opportunities to advance their knowledge of the field. I also mentored incoming students in the accelerated bachelor’s/master’s program and, after completing the program myself, served as a tutor and supplemental instruction leader for the Graduate Multidisciplinary Biomedical Science program, helping students adjust to the rigor of graduate-level coursework.

After graduation, I worked as Program Coordinator for the NIH-funded Healthy Passages Study, investigating the impact of early life stress on adult health outcomes and DNA methylation. This role brought my attention to the importance of health literacy and strengthened my commitment to ensuring all individuals not only have access to healthcare, but also the knowledge and support to use it effectively.

All of these experiences have shaped my journey toward genetic counseling and guided me to where I am today. In my free time, you can usually find me at a Pure Barre class or exploring new restaurants and breweries! I am truly grateful to be part of the 5th genetic counseling cohort at Ϲ, and I look forward to continuing my education here while building meaningful connections along the way!
