Biophysics to Offer New Fundamentals of Cryo-Electron Microscopy Course

The Department of Biophysics is excited to offer a new course, Fundamentals of Cryo-Electron Microscopy, beginning with the fall 2026 semester.

Fundamentals of Cryo-Electron Microscopy is a six-week graduate course (three hours/week) that blends concise lectures with guided practicals to build operational fluency in cryo-electron microscopy. Students will learn core theory and execute a streamlined single-particle workflow using an instructor-provided dataset to generate a validated map and fitted model. By the end of the course, students will understand basic cryo-EM principles and practical strategies for sample preparation, data collection, image processing, and 3D reconstruction of macromolecular assemblies. The course directors are Linda Olson, PhD, and Yaqiang Wang, PhD.
