Joint Patient and Caregiver Intervention for Older African Americans with Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes (JOINT-HOME)

About this research
This is a 6-month long research study that is looking at whether a 1-on-1, telephone-based diabetes and social needs problem-solving intervention will improve health outcomes in African Americans aged 50 and older with type 2 diabetes and improve quality of life for their informal caregivers. This research study will include 100 African Americans with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes and their informal caregivers.

What this research study includes

Every participant in this study will meet with a health educator over the telephone once a week for 8 weeks. Participants will receive diabetes education and skills training, and information on problem solving and how to resolve social needs. Informal caregivers will join 4 of the 8 weekly calls. All participants will be paid for completing the study surveys and labs during the study.

Criteria for joining

  • Age 50 and older
  • African American/Black
  • HbA1c of 8% or higher at screening visit
  • Have an informal caregiver who is willing to participate

Neighborhood Environment Influence on Health Burden and Risk—Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome Study (NEIGHBOR-CKM)

About this research
This study is looking at the link between one’s neighborhood and CKM syndrome – or heart and kidney disease – in Milwaukee. Additionally, it will assess how social determinants influence risk factors and healthcare access for Milwaukee adults with CKM syndrome.

What this research study includes
This research involves a single in-person visit. During this visit, you will complete a questionnaire about your health, environment, and self-care, provide a small blood sample, and have your height, weight, and blood pressure measured. All participants will receive compensation for completing the visit.

You may be eligible if you

  • Are 18 or older
  • Have any of the following: diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, or a BMI of 25 or higher
  • Live in Milwaukee County

Research Study for Black Men with Type 2 Diabetes and Prior Incarceration (MANAGE-DM)

About this research
Who? Black men in Milwaukee, who experience multiple forms of discrimination and worse health outcomes
Why? To test an intervention to improve diabetes outcomes for Black men with a history of incarceration
What? A 6-month long research study to test a nursing intervention

What this research study includes 

Every participant in this study will receive diabetes education. Some participants will receive support from a registered nurse. Every participant will be paid for participating in the study.

Criteria for joining

  • You May Be Eligible If Age 18 or older
  • Have Type 2 diabetes
  • Identify as Black or African American Incarcerated at some time during your life
  • Have a HbA1c of 8% or higher

Research Study for Black Men with Type 2 Diabetes and Prior Incarceration (MANAGE-DM) Flyer (PDF)

Research Study of Health-Related Social Needs, Chronic Kidney Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes (MM-MDA)

This is a 2-hour, one time research study looking to identify and understand barriers to care in order to develop better interventions to improve health outcomes, quality of life, and self-care behaviors for adults with Diabetic Kidney Disease, who also experience health-related social needs such as lack of stable housing, finances, food, transportation, utilities, and concern for safety. This research study will include 300 African American community members with Diabetic Kidney Disease.

What this research study includes
Every participant will be asked to complete a 1-hour long survey. This survey will go over questions regarding Type 2 Diabetes, Chronic Kidney Disease, health-related social needs, as well as questions pertaining to self-care and lifestyle behaviors. All eligible participants will be paid $50 for their time in completing the survey and labs to measure HbA1c, LDL and kidney function.

Criteria for joining

  • Age 18 years or older African American
  • Have type 2 diabetes
  • Have chronic kidney disease or on dialysis
  • Have 1 or more health-related social need

The Role of Structural Racism on Disparities in Clinical Outcomes for Diabetes: A Mixed Methods Study (SR-Mech)

About this research
This research study is for people who are 18 years old or older and who have type 2 diabetes. This study is a survey that only needs to be completed once. We will use the survey answers to learn more about how racism impacts people's health.

What this research study includes
This research study includes one in-person visit. At this visit, you will fill out a survey that asks questions about how you live with your diabetes. We will also take a small amount of blood and take your blood pressure.

Criteria for joining

  • 18 years old or older
  • Have T2DM
  • Speak English
