Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR)

Center for AIDS Intervention Research (CAIR)

The Center for AIDS Intervention Research was founded in 1990 as a multidisciplinary HIV prevention research center that was eventually supported for 25 years by a P30 Center grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). CAIR was one of only a handful of dedicated HIV prevention research centers in the country and the only center of its kind supported by NIMH between the east and west coasts. Since the Center's inception, CAIR investigators have published more than 1,000 scholarly articles in the HIV/AIDS field and been awarded more than $200 million in research funding.

Center for Community Health and Intervention Research (CHAIR)

In 2023, the Center formally expanded its name and mission to include the development, evaluation, and dissemination of behavioral, social, and structural interventions to combat other health conditions. While we remain committed to HIV prevention and treatment research, our research priorities within the Center also include mental and behavioral health, LGBTQ+ health, substance use, health disparities, the impacts of policies on public health, and other related topics.

How we're organized

The Center is organized into three research cores that support and enhance the conduct of research studies undertaken by faculty investigators. Each of the scientific Cores brings together a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff with shared expertise in the Core area.
all
Qualitative Methods Core
The Qualitative Methods Core supports the design and conduct of rigorous qualitative and mixed-methods research. Core faculty and staff provide consultation on study design, development of interview and focus group guides, data collection strategies, analytic approaches, and interpretation and dissemination of results.
Quantitative Core
The Quantitative Methods Core provides expertise in research design, measurement, data management, and statistical analysis. Core investigators collaborate with faculty to develop analytic plans, conduct statistical analyses, and interpret and disseminate findings.
Community Engagement Core
The Community Engagement Core strengthens partnerships between the Center and community stakeholders to ensure our research is responsive to community priorities, promotes health equity, and includes community partners. The Core supports community-engaged and participatory research approaches, facilitates partnerships with community organizations, and assists with community-focused dissemination of research findings.
