Ϲ Transplant Psychology
The Transplant Psychology service is integrated within the Solid Organ Transplant program and works exclusively with patients in evaluation for transplant and those post-transplant. Transplant Psychologists also direct clinical research initiatives aimed at evaluating access, clinical outcomes, and psychosocial functioning in solid organ transplant.
Transplant Psychologist Services
Transplant Psychologists conduct biopsychosocial assessments and ongoing psychological interventions exclusively with patients in evaluation for solid organ transplant and post-transplant. Through identifying relative psychosocial risk and protective factors for each patient, the Transplant Psychologist can develop individualized recommendations to support transplant candidacy, readiness, quality of life, and long-term success.
Services include coping with chronic illness, adjusting to medical illness, mood management, improving adherence, understanding cognitive impairment, and drug and alcohol relapse prevention. Outpatient services are provided both in-person and via telehealth depending on patient need. Patients may be referred to meet with Transplant Psychology as part of their transplant evaluation or post-transplant care; they may also request referral.
Dr. Stephanie Zanowski is the Director of the Transplant Mental Health Program and oversees the processes and practices within Transplant Psychology. Dr. Jenessa Price directs the integrated Ϲ Transplant Neuropsychology Clinic, which is a specialty service embedded within Transplant Psychology.
Transplant Neuropsychology
Transplant Neuropsychology is the clinical practice of understanding cognition in the context of end-stage organ failure and solid organ transplant, their treatments, and the chronic diseases that often accompany them.
The integrated Ϲ Transplant Neuropsychology Clinic was developed in 2018 and expands services within Transplant Psychology to address cognitive functioning and its impact on disease management, long-term brain health, and overall quality of life with transplant.
Patients referred to the Ϲ Transplant Neuropsychology Clinic will complete an evaluation visit including an interview to understand their current symptoms and functioning and 2-3 hours of neuropsychological testing to examine attention, processing speed, memory, executive function, and other cognitive abilities. Patients will receive feedback about their cognitive strengths and weaknesses and individualized recommendations to support adherence and transplant goals. Specific recommendations are also shared with the patient’s transplant team to help tailor the treatment plan to meet each patient’s unique needs. Transplant Neuropsychology is a lifelong resource to support patients as they age with transplant.
Transplant Neuropsychology Consortium
In 2024, Dr. Price co-founded the Transplant Neuropsychology Consortium, which serves to define Transplant Neuropsychology practice, explore neurocognition in end-stage organ failure and transplant, identify interventions to support transplant success, and improve access to transplant for all.
