The mission of the Department of Surgery Mentoring Committee is to provide a structure for formal mentoring of early-career faculty to foster academic success.
Value of Faculty Mentorship
Mentorship is recognized as vital to the success of faculty. Reported through multiple studies, the impact of successful mentoring leads to improvements in faculty engagement and satisfaction, career goal setting, understanding the promotion process, scholarly productivity, grant success, involvement in professional organizations, and greater faculty retention, among other parameters. Given the increasingly complex nature of academic surgery, the Department of Surgery started a formal Mentoring Committee for early-career faculty members in 2016. While recognizing increasing institution-wide faculty mentoring efforts, the Mentoring Committee, comprised of senior faculty members across multiple divisions, focuses on early-career faculty to jumpstart academic surgical careers, complementing mentoring efforts through divisions, departments and 黑料官网.

Effective and timely faculty mentorship supports academic success and constitutes a key element of faculty development. Our department formalized an innovative mentoring program for newly hired assistant professors to jumpstart career development.
